Both blue and green spirulina are very healthy, but why should you choose blue spirulina over green spirulina? By the way, I recommend using both because they are different in their health benefits. 

Blue spirulina is simply the extract of blue pigment from green spirulina [R]. The blue extract has no fishy taste like green spirulina sometimes does.

  • B-vitamins and minerals are found in blue spirulina.
  • Rare pigment that is naturally blue called phycocyanin.

How to use blue spirulina

Containing a rare natural blue color, blue spirulina can be added to just about any dish that you want to enhance.

To start with, add slowly to your diet so that your digestive tract can adapt to these potent foods.  

I admit that I haven’t tried to bake with it yet, but if you have to drop me a line and tell me how it turns out.   The Aztecs made cakes out of it, so I’m sure it would be amazing in baked desserts. 

One thing I can tell you for sure is that it makes every day feel a little more special when I use it in my “lattes” or smoothies.

Blue Latte Recipe Tips

A simple way to enjoy healthy antioxidants is to simply mix blue spirulina powder into heated milk with your desired flavorings.  Done.  Now you have a beautiful blue latte. 

Making a blue spirulina latte by The Healthy RD You can add about 1/2 tsp of blue spirulina to any kind of nut milk or dairy milk to give it a wonderful natural color.

Blue Latte Recipe

This latte is super simple and filled with the antioxidant phycocyanin from blue spirulina. Delicious and clean.

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 tsp blue spirulina
  • 1/8 tsp ginger, dried can use cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp lemon zest optional but recommended
  • 1 tsp honey optional


  • Heat up the milk in a saucepan until desired temperature. Mix in the rest of the ingredients, frothing if desired.  I sometimes use my Keurig milk frother, which gets it to the perfect temperature for sipping.

Blue spirulina is generally recognized as safe, so no adverse reactions are expected.  Spirulina side effects are rare and usually occur because someone eats more than 2-3 tablespoons per day. 

Gradually increase your intake of spirulina. 

All websites lump the nutrition facts of blue spirulina and green spirulina together, so it is impossible to know how much vitamin K is in blue spirulina, but it would likely be less than green spirulina. 

Green spirulina contains a very moderate amount of vitamin K at 24 micrograms per 100 grams.  Still, if you are warfarin, make sure to check with your doctor before eating spirulina.  

Look for high quality brands that do not have contaminants.  This is because algae grows in water, so the quality will depend on the quality of water where it is grown. 


Blue spirulina, along with green spirulina, are great ways to kick up the antioxidants in your diet to the next level. They may help you feel more energy and vitality along the way.
